WHO ARE WE?
According the World Food Programme (WFP), Haiti has one of the highest levels of food insecurity in the world with nearly half of its population undernourished. In 2018, 22% of children in the country were reported as being malnourished and in immediate need of food assistance. Despite millions of dollars being spent every year to fight hunger and poverty in Haiti via renowned organizations, these conditions continue to worsen at an alarming rate.
The group that is most affected by this is the small farmers of Haiti. Because they live in the rural areas of the country that are devoid of any type of infrastructure, this group of people is usually forgotten and often considered unreachable. Left with no help or type of agricultural support, these farmers often abandon their lands seeking refuge and trying to make a living in slums of major cities.
Camp-Mary United Inc. is a grassroots non-profit organization that is based in New York and composed of farmers as well as the sons and daughters of farmers living both in Haiti and abroad. For decades, they have witnessed the unjust marginalization of their peers and the lack of appreciation and support for their agricultural work. Because of this, these natural-born-leaders vowed to establish a platform that will bring the cause of small Haitian farmers to the forefront while providing a means to channel necessary assistance and support that addresses their needs and improves agricultural production in the country.
